Is there a good Yacht Charter for the Greek islands?
Want to do a yacht hire next summer – wondered if anyone had any suggestions/recommendations for the area?
Don’t mind which side but would like to island hop.

Before you charter your yacht, I recommend you to think carefully about where you want to sail.
As The poster Jason said, the Sporades is a good deal and the winds are not so bad there but no marinas. Skopelos has a good port. Skiathos a very small one.
If you are thinking about sailing in the Cyclades, keep in mind that the Meltemi wind is blowing there very strongly and that you often can’t sail. When there is no Meltemi, there is no wind, then you have to go by motor.
The Cyclades are very beautiful but they are hell for sailors. There are no marinas and sometimes the ports are way out of town. The port in Santorini is the best nightmare. It is difficult finding water.
Mykonos has a very nice port for all the Luxury Cruises, it is right next to the port for sailing Yachts but the facilities cannot be used by yacht owners. Naxos had a very nice port but this year it has decayed completely. You will have problems with your anchor there.
So, out of my experience, the best bet is the Dodecanese. The winds are not so fierce. You can easily charter boats in Kos Marina. Rhodos is another nightmare port though. But the rest of the islands are great. Leros even has two marinas with showers. Samos Marina is very good too. Patmos is just the port but it is central. Tinos and Nysiros are very pleasant ports. Vathy bay in Kalymnos is very picturesque just make sure you use a lot of anchor chain. Lipsi is my all time favorite. Arki is very cute too and Levitha is an isolated island with a very good taverna and mooring buoys and has the best crystal blue water.
I never heard of anybody having any problems with their yacht charter, so I guess it is up to you what boat you want to sail. I think the prices are about the same everywhere you go.

@Airpole: I completely forgot those islands….it has been a long time… and you are right, they would be the best choice in summer.
P.S. I also recommend you to sail in Sicily and the Aeolian islands one day. The marina in Milazzo charters good yachts.
Turkey has the best marinas and sailing from Turgutreis to Marmaris is very easy with plenty of beautiful bays. Sailing iaround Antalya in summer is not a good idea, too hot and too many gulets but highly recommendable in fall.
